Common Symptoms of Head and Neck Cancer

Typical symptoms of head and neck cancer include a lump or sore that does not heal or go away, a persistent sore throat, difficulty swallowing or hoarseness.

Other symptoms specific to the various cancers include:


Oral Cavity Cancer
  • A white or red patch on the gums, tongue or lining of the mouth
  • A swelling of the jaw
  • Bleeding or pain in the mouth
Nasal Cavity or Sinus Cancers
  • Sinuses that are consistently blocked
  • Chronic sinus infections that do not respond to treatment with antibiotics
  • Bleeding through the nose
  • Frequent headaches
  • Constant swelling or watery eyes
  • Pain in the upper teeth
Salivary Gland Cancer
  • Swelling under the chin or near the jawbone
  • Numbness of the face muscles
  • Pain in the face, chin or neck that does not go away
Oropharynx and Hypopharynx Cancers
  • Constant ear pain
Nasopharynx Cancer
  • Breathing trouble
  • Frequent headaches
  • Pain, ringing in the ears or difficulty hearing
Larynx Cancer
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Ear pain
